Live happily, you're worth it.
Greetings! It's Sue here.
First, thanks to all who could attend my recent talk and exhibit at the Harris Center for Conservation Education: “An Illustrated Exploration of Lichen Lore.“
Thanks also to Kay Hurley for co-presenting with me at the opening; she was a huge hit with her enthusiasm for and knowledge of lichens.
This traveling exhibit is based on my illustrations for our book, Lichenpedia: A Brief Compendium, written by Kay and due out in May 2024 by the Princeton University Press.
Now I’m happily preparing for my next exhibit which runs Saturday, January 6 - Friday, February 2, 2024. I hope you'll come see it!
“Loving a Leek and the Soil It Grows In: The Art and Science of the Soil Biome”
Opening Reception: Saturday, January 6, 2024, 11 AM - 1 PM
Lawrence Library, 15 Main Street, Pepperell, MA
With a special performance by singer/songwriter by PJ Rogue
Why this exhibit?
I wanted to understand why the vegetables from my local organic CSA farm (Upswing Farm) are robust and super tasty. To find out, I met with soil-health experts Rubèn Parrilla and John Duke of NOFA/Mass. We examined soil from the farm, and I learned about the mutualistic relationship between plants and the soil biome, which contributes to the health and taste of my veggies.
The exhibit features my interpretations of the soil critters and minerals we observed under a microscope, plus sketches and paintings of root veggies.
Please feel free to forward this email to anyone you think might like it. Thanks for reading!
All the best,

But given your interest in the climate change issue I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that esteemed climate scientist William Moomaw, PhD will be presenting on “The Public Value of Pepperell's Forest and Shade Trees.” Moomaw is Professor...
Live happily, you're worth it. Collaborations Rooted in Trees and BooksOnce upon a time, I was a librarian — and a closeted handmade-paper bookmaker. My love of books runs deep, and so does my love of trees. My next two art projects bring these passions together with two artist friends. Fine woodworker Mark Whitcomb and I are creating a Coat Tree with Nuthatches — a functional sculpture that celebrates both craftsmanship and nature. And master bookbinder and conservator, Carolina Veenstra and...
Live happily, you're worth it. Spotlighting Stories That Inspire In the early stages of making his film, Bob Nesson met with me and poet/writer Charles Coe, who teaches poetry in various settings, including prisons. Part of my creative life has been devoted to spotlighting people who follow their passion for the natural world or social change. I’ve done this through documentary films, illustrations, and collaborations with people from all walks of life. Today I'd like to highlight John Walsh,...
